Steven Miller MBBCh, DTM&H, FFPath, MMed, MRCPath, Dip HIV Med(UK) is a consultant in Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases in private practice in Johannesburg, South Africa. He is a member of the microbiology, virology and cell culture team at Lancet Laboratories and, until recently, the Medical Director of the innovirInstitute, a registered trust providing state-of-the-art laboratory diagnostics, clinical trial opportunities and patient care services for people with HIV/AIDS. Dr Miller is a graduate of the Witwatersrand Medical School, Johannesburg. Following a period of post-graduate training overseas in cardiothoracic surgery, he returned to Johannesburg and joined the South African Institute for Medical Research where he qualified as a clinical microbiologist. He was appointed associate professor of clinical microbiology in 1989, shortly before he entered private practice. After several years of laboratory-based work, Dr Miller migrated to the clinical practice of infectious disease with an emphasis on HIV medicine and research. His involvement in this field dates back to 1984 when he helped to establish the HIV Clinic at the Johannesburg Academic Hospital. Since then he has lectured and published widely on HIV infection and has served on several local and international AIDS planning committees. He is a founding member of the HIV Clinicians’ Society of Southern Africa and served as chairperson of its inaugural Treatment Guidelines Committee. He has been principal investigator in many international collaborative trials and continues to play an active role in clinical research.
